Jerill Vance announced a program offered to us by Hartville  Tool Co.  The program will give our members a 20% discount the first year and 15% after that.  Three percent of all sales to club members will also be rebated back to the club’s general treasury each year.

 FROM THE PRESIDENT

Recently a friend dropped by my shop.  Since I had visited his shop, I invited him to come by mine.  After checking out my shop, we talked about tools and what works for each of us individually.  We also traded ideas on how to improve our router tables.  We never turned on any machines, but I learned a lot from him in the short time he was here that evening.

This is the reason our club exists.  Many of our members are glad to share what works for them in their shop, so if you have any questions about woodworking just ask.  But if you really want to gain knowledge, invite a member to your shop!

Enjoy your shop time!

 TREASURER’S REPORT

Tom McClellan reports that there is $3,438.59 in the club treasury and $502.00 in the Special Projects Fund.

 REFRESHMENTS

The refreshments for the August meeting were provided by Bill Smith.  Glenn Pauley volunteered to bring the refreshments in September.

 PICNIC

The Valley Woodworkers annual picnic will be held on September 29 at Lloyd McIntyre’s.  Lloyd passed out a map to his house and said that there is plenty of parking and if it rains there is room for everyone inside.  Lloyd’s house is somewhat of a museum and his grandchildren will be available for tours.

He also suggested something different this year.  He would like for everyone to make something and bring it to the picnic and donate it for a sale, with the proceeds to go toward a future building. He will provide tables for the sale items.

As usual the club will provide the BBQ, buns, slaw, and drinks. If everyone will bring a side dish or dessert, there will be plenty to eat.  Lloyd said to arrive any time after 11:00 and stay as late as you want.  We’ll probably eat around noon or so.

 WOOD FESTIVAL

During the month of October, the Museum In The Community will be showing works made by our club members along with the Mountaineer Woodturners and the River City Woodworkers.  On October 27 the show will culminate with a Wood Festival similar to the festival we had last fall.

Everyone is encouraged to show something they have made at the museum.

Items can be shown only or offered for sale with 30% going to the museum.

Jerill Vance passed out forms for information needed for the curator to make the display tags and also to know how much room/space to designate for the displayed items.

 SEARCH COMMITTEE

Glen Jewell reported that the search committee hadn’t found anything definite yet, but they have several prospects.  One of the prospects is the use of the old Taft Elementary School near  the Westmoreland Rd. Interstate Exit.

Another is a building beside Charleston Lincoln & Mercury dealership on the West side of Charleston. A couple of buildings in Dunbar are also being scrutinized.

If nothing is found before the November meeting, we will meet in a library or church until a building is found.  We will also store our equipment and library until a suitable building is found.

 SHOP TIP

Dan Pleska provided the shop tip for August.  He showed how he uses old credit cards or hotel room key cards to spread glue on large surfaces.

 SHOW AND TELL

Please bring your items for Show and Tell. It is a great way to learn and see what others are making.

Art Boggs - showed the dulcimer he made for the club project. He made it from Maple with an Ash fret board.

Claude Croteau - brought a square bowl he turned made of Black Cherry with Maple string inlay.

Tanner Boster - showed an oval box made from Quartersawn Sycamore.

Glenn Pauley - showed a puzzle he made that has a golf ball inside a carved out piece of wood.  He challenged everyone to figure out how he got the golf ball in the puzzle.

Roy Reveal - brought a square box make of Walnut and Poplar, a small bowl made from Zebrawood, a small box with curved sides, and a box with pin and cove corners.

Bill Morris - showed the dulcimer he made for the club project. He made his with Cherry and Sycamore.

RAFFLE

The raffle for August, a set of bench chisels, was won by Lloyd McIntyre.

 DEMONSTRATION

Jerill Vance, Dan Pleska, Bill Morris, Glen Jewell, Roy Jones, and Peter Howell showed how they made handles for chisels, jigs, threaded knobs, awls, mallets and other assorted shop tools.  It was a testament to the ingenuity of woodworkers.

Guest speaker, Marshall Burgess, explained the differences between a “Buried Tang” knife handle and a “Laminated Tang” knife handle. Most, if not all, of the wood he uses for his knives is “stabilized.”  This proprietary process isn’t explained by the manufacturers, but the general thought is that they pressurize the wood with a plastic compound that is completely through the wood.  This makes the wood extremely stable and hard.

Marshall finished by explaining how he cuts, shapes, polishes, and sharpens the knives that he makes.
