There will be lots of gifts and gift certificates given as Door Prizes. More details and directions can be seen on our website:  www.valleywoodworkers.org/special_event.htm

ANNUAL PICNIC

The annual picnic will be September 30, at Glenn Pauley’s home. Club members and their families are welcome. Bring a covered dish and everything else is provided. More details and directions will be available and a head count will be taken at the September meeting.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

The air is cooler and the leaves are starting to turn, making perfect weather for our annual picnic, which is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 30Th.  Plan on bringing the family and enjoying the food with friends at Glenn Pauley’s residence.  Glenn will present picnic details at the meeting.

Also, the Fall Wood Demonstration is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 7th.  There will be many door prizes and demonstrations. Two other area woodworking clubs will be attending the event along with Valley Woodworkers. For more information on both of these events see our website.

This is also the time of year when we really start to cut and assemble the toys for Christmas. If you are interested in helping, contact Peter Howell for information.

You will want to attend this coming meeting as our 2nd.  Club project is under way, and Glen Jewell will be leading us in the construction of the blanket chest.  Enjoy your shop time!

MYSTERIOUS ITEM

Elvin Davis provided the Mysterious Item. David Conley guessed the items as a joiner for a cross-cut saw and a saw set.

SHOP TIP

The Shop Tip was to identify a piece of wood provided by Jerill Vance. Tanner Boster identified the wood as Beech.

TOYS

Are you interested in helping to make toys for this year’s Salvation Army Christmas Toy Project? If you have woodworking skills – we need them. If your skills are limited, we will teach you. Allan McNeel (586.1065), Dan Pleska (546.2367), Andy Sheetz (549.4929) and Peter Howell (757.3997) will be operating organized workshops. You can either go to these workshops and help a team of other elves, make the toys in your workshop, or a combination of doing some of the work in your shop and some of the work in someone else’s shop. You can also work in multiple workshops if you like.

This year we will be making doll cradles, alphabet block sets with a small wagon to hold them, play wagons, rocking horses, and small cars and trucks. If there is another toy that you would like to make, please contact Peter Howell to discuss your ideas.

Please contact one of the workshop leaders and ask how you can help. Each workshop leader sets his own schedule for toy making. Peter Howell will be making toys in his workshop this coming Saturday,

September 16th. He can only accommodate about three additional elves at a time, so please call ahead and reserve your seat at the workbench. The other workshops have similar limitations, so always call first. Peter Howell will be having workshops almost every Saturday until Thanksgiving. His shop will also be open during the week by appointment only.  See attachments for pictures of toys.

SHOW AND TELL

  • Glenn Pauley - showed a Dresser Top Valet. The valet was made of Bird’s Eye Maple and Bloodwood with a clear lacquer finish.
  • Roy Reveal - brought a Jewelry Box made of Ash with Walnut inlays. It was finished with boiled linseed oil, three coats of shellac, and Briwax.
  • Ron Sheets - showed a piece of highly figured Ash. A friend of his used some of the figured Ash for pistol handles.
  • Tanner Boster - brought a scroll sawed angle that was his first project. Tanner is the son on Steve Boster.
  • Bob Shingleton - showed several rubber band guns that shoot ping-pong balls. He also showed a Reindeer and Sleigh Candle Holder.
  • Allan McNeel - brought a Mahogany Lowboy. The 18th century lowboy had carved shells on the front and the knees of the Queen Anne legs. The finish is boiled linseed oil, a seal coat of shellac, some glazing, then more shellac.

DEMONSTRATION

Glen Jewell began the second club project: a Blanket Chest. He started off with a brief history of chests in general. He went over the details of construction of a chest he brought. He provided plans for five different styles and sizes of chests. He will also help locate the wide boards needed for some of the chests.
