FROM THE PRESIDENT

Spring is right around the corner and most of us are ready to participate in outdoor activities. However, spring rains still allow us plenty of shop time. This is the ideal time to clean shop and possibly make room for more tools that we don’t need but have to have.

The papers have been filed for non-profit status and hopefully we will be granted that status soon. The search committee is still actively looking for another meeting place. If you know of any place that may be available, please mention it to anyone on this committee. And if you have not paid your dues yet please do so. Also, the membership survey has been completed and compiled to give the executive committee direction. The final results will be posted on the bulletin board at the meeting room.

We will be starting another club project soon to allow everyone the opportunity to learn more about woodworking. This is one of the more popular events that we do as a club.
If anyone is willing to do a “hands on” demonstration for the club, please contact any officer. Also, be sure and continue to bring in the “show and tell” items so everyone can learn from what you have done. Enjoy your shop time!

TREASURER’S REPORT

Tom McClellan reports that there is $2,030.48 in the club treasury and $327.00 in the Special Projects Fund. The annual dues of $30.00 is due at the beginning of each year.

BY-LAWS

Peter Howell presided over the discussion and vote on the by-laws. A motion was made and seconded to add a purpose to the by-laws that stated that the club would identify opportunities to purchase and/or rent materials and woodworking equipment. A motion was also made and seconded to change the amount of an expenditure needing the board’s approval from $50.00 to $100.00. All motions were passed with a vote by show of hands.
Changes were also made to comply with State Code. They are: ten days notice (instead of three) shall be given to the members of any meeting and a quorum is defined as twenty percent of the membership (instead of twenty percent of members present).
A motion was also made and seconded to accept the by-laws as amended. This motion was also passed with a vote by show of hands.

SHOP TIP

Bill Morris provided the shop tip for February. Bill made a series of angle blocks he uses with his grinder and sharpening jig to sharpen his turning gouges. Whenever he needs to sharpen a gouge, he places the appropriate angle block in the jig. Bill says that they are “quick, easy and accurate.”

SHOW AND TELL

Jerill Vance - Showed the frames he made for the certificates we present to the Toy Project Contributors. The frames were made of Ash, Maple, and Oak with Walnut inlays in the corners.

Glenn Pauley - Asked if anyone knew why there was a mark on today's rules at 19 3/16?” It is the measurement between centers of the new engineered lumber floor joists that are being used in house construction.

Clyde Drake - Brought a toy golf cart he made, complete with golf clubs. The cart is made of Poplar.

Bill Morris - Showed a lidded bowl made from Apple and Walnut he is going to enter in a show at the Mountaineer Woodturners in Ripley.

Tanner Boster - Brought two scroll sawn boxes. One was made of Ash and Cherry. The other was made of Quarter Sawn Sycamore and Cherry.

Jesse Lazear - Showed a sample of two woods not often seen. They are Pink Dogwood and Persimmon.

Ian Moir - Brought a Mahogany plaque that holds a coin and a tile that commemorates the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, VA. He also showed a small oak bookshelf he had restored. It had been painted brown.

RAFFLE

Earl Williams won a router bit case in this month’s raffle.

DEMONSTRATION

Steve Tracey provided February’s demonstration on “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Regular Polygons.”
Steve showed a number of measuring and marking tools. His handout provided the angles and measurements of 3 sided Equilateral Triangles through 10 sided Decagons.
Steve also demonstrated two methods of laying out an Ellipse.
