VALLEY WOODWORKERS
January 2007

JANUARY MEETING

There were 52 people in attendance at the January meeting with six guests. Welcome to Bob Betterton from Hurricane, Carol Cutlip and Maureen Helvey from South Charleston, Dave Harless from Elkview, Terry Bumgardner from Advent, WV, and Bruce Bode from Newbury, OH.
Thirty-three people paid dues at the January meeting. At this time we have thirty-three paid members and 1 junior member.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Yearly dues of $30.00 are due at the first of every year. If you haven’t paid yet, the treasurer will be taking them up at the meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Tom McClellan reports that there is $1,997.78 in the club treasury and $290.00 in the Special Projects Fund.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we are entering February, the cold weather has pushed a lot of us indoors to our woodworking shops. If you have any items for “show and tell,” be sure to bring them to the meeting. Remember, any item, completed or not, is welcome. We all learn from the accomplishments of other craftsmen (and craftswomen).
Valley Woodworkers of WV, like any organization, is made up of members. It is because of the active members that this group has grown. As you know, we are currently looking for a larger meeting place. So again we are asking for any member that has information on a possible meeting place to pass the information on to the search committee (listed later).
Because we inform and educate each other it is critical that we know the interest of the group. Please take time to fill out a survey for this year so the executive committee can plan for the year. They will be available at the February meeting or just bring the one sent out electronically to the meeting. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Also, if you are willing to conduct a demonstration on any woodworking subject let any of the officers know. Enjoy your shop time!

CLUB WEBSITE

Jerill Vance announced that the Valley Woodworkers will offer business card sized ad space on the club’s website for $10.00 per year. This nominal fee is to pay for the cost of the website, which is $94.50 per year. This offer is for members only. The ad must be designed by the member and approved by the Board of Directors.

MEETING PLACE

Glenn Pauley, who owns the building where we have our meetings, announced that due to the expansion of his business we would need to find a new meeting place. He gave the club the entire year of 2007 to find a new meeting place if needed. Jerill Vance announced that the executive officers had formed an ad-hoc committee to find a new meeting place. The committee consisted of officers Allan McNeel, Glen Jewell, and Andy Sheetz. Jerill Vance asked for club members to serve on this committee and Steve Boster, Eli Rouse, and Jerry Phelps volunteered.

INCORPORATION AND NON-PROFIT STATUS

The Valley Woodworkers has filed for and been recognized by the Secretary of State as a corporation. This was to ensure that the club was operating fully within the boundaries of the law. We are also in the process of applying for 501 C (3) status to lessen our tax burden and make it possible to get grants and solicit donations. Since we are now a corporation, the club officers have assumed the positions of the Board of Directors for the Corporation.

BY-LAWS

Jerill Vance distributed a draft of new by-laws put together by the Board of Directors to comply with corporation and non-profit status requirements. This also meets the requirement of our current by-laws and will be discussed and voted on at the February meeting.

SHOP TIP

Bill Morris discussed a different way to align and cut dovetails. He used a level to line up his board, being held in a vise, so that the angled line he was cutting was vertical.

SHOW AND TELL

Roy Reveal - showed a wall plaque with a routered design. He also showed several Christmas ornaments and a wine bottle stopper that were turned on a lathe.

Dan Pleska - brought a digital angle gauge. After zeroing the unit on a horizontal surface or table, the built-in magnet allows you to mount it to a fence or saw blade to read the angle.

Randy Hodges - showed a Cherry and Walnut truck bank that had an antique post office mail box door for the back of the truck

Carl Mercer - brought several bags of “T” nuts that he picked up at an auction. He bagged the nuts up and offered them for $1.00 per bag with the proceeds to go to the club’s Special Project Fund.

Art King - brought his blanket chest he made for his club project. The six board chest has hand-cut dovetails and was distressed and painted with milk paint to give it an antique look.

DEMONSTRATION

Charlie Brown, a wood turner who demonstrates and sells at Tamarack, discussed Spindle Turning.
Spindle turning is defined as turning with the grain of the wood parallel to the lathe. He started by discussing basic safety and lathe upkeep. Charlie’s main emphasis for this demonstration was on using the skew chisel. Using the skew takes practice and when you become proficient in using it, your turning will become much nicer.
The skew, while laying on the tool rest, should be presented to the turning wood, riding the bevel and tilting the skew until the edge starts to cut in the middle of the blade or edge. Care should be taken to keep the top or bottom points from coming in contact with the wood. This will cause the cutting edge to dig into the wood.
He concluded by doing some work with the gouge and offering members to give it a try.
