OCTOBER MEETING
There were 39 people in attendance at the October meeting
with three guests. Welcome to Larry Lipscomb from Elkview,
Barry Armstrong from Hurricane, and Bruce Davis from Scott
Depot.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Christmas is just around the corner and now is the time to
assist with the Toy Program if you have not done so yet.
Talk to any of the toy workshop owners to find out what you
can do to help out and see what the schedule is. Peter
Howell has done a great job this year on the toy program!
The executive committee is in the process of filing for
non-profit status for Valley Woodworkers of WV. We have
already obtained an Employee Identification Number (EIN) and
hopefully by next year we will gain the non-profit status.
This will enable us to apply for grants.
Also, starting in January, the executive committee will be
allowing members to place a business card-sized ad on the
website for $10. This will generate enough money to pay for
the website. If you have a business, this is a great way of
advertising at a very inexpensive price.
The nominating
committee will be giving a report at the next meeting.
Glenn Pauley has done an excellent job heading up this ad
hoc team. In December, everyone will have the opportunity to
nominate someone for any office. I believe a healthy
organization should have several individuals running for
office.
At the next
meeting Glen Jewell will be demonstrating how to apply a
finish to the blanket chest project.
Enjoy your
shop time!

DEMONSTRATION
Jerill Vance gave a demonstration on moisture meters at the
October meeting.
Before hardwoods can be used for furniture or other
projects, it needs to be dried to 6% to 8%. The moisture can
be measured using a variety of meters to fit most any price
range.
There are two types of meters. The pin type and the pinless
type. With the pin type, the pins are driven or pushed into
the wood, and the meter measures the electrical resistance
between the pins. The amount of moisture in the wood affects
the amount of resistance measured. One of the disadvantages
of the pin type is the holes it leaves in the wood. An
advantage is the measure of the moisture at the interior of
the wood, wherever the pins are driven.
The pinless type uses a magnetic wave that is sent into the
wood in an area under the meter. The moisture in the wood
affects the wave and the meter measures that difference. The
obvious advantage to the pinless type is that it doesn’t
leave any holes. The disadvantage is that the meter measures
to a preset depth; therefore, an accurate reading may be
difficult on a thicker board.
